Reduced auto body damage during storms yet millions of vehicles still affected

Decreased auto hailstorm destruction - still multiple millions in damages reported

Decreased vehicle damage in storms in spite of continued high costs

Let's chat about the statistics on car damage from weather events in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland!

In 2024, it appears that motor vehicle insurers had to deal with fewer weather damage claims than the previous year, according to the annual report by Gesamtverband der Deutschen Versicherungswirtschaft (GDV). A fact worth noting: in Rhineland-Palatinate, approximately 6,500 vehicles suffered around EUR 18 million worth of damage due to storms, hailstorms, and lightning strikes. For Saarland, the damage totaled around EUR 5 million, from 1,500 weather-damaged vehicles.

So, what about the previous year? Well, the number of vehicles with weather-related damages in Rhineland-Palatinate soared to 29,000, causing EUR 107 million in damages. Meanwhile, Saarland saw 3,000 weather-damaged vehicles, amounting to a damage bill of EUR 9 million.

Interestingly, the GDV issued a warning, highlighting that natural hazard risks nationwide could be on the rise. Although the number of cases and damages in 2024 were roughly 340,000 and EUR 1.3 billion, respectively (long-term average as per the GDV), the association emphasizes an alarming escalation of natural hazard risks due to climate change.

With those numbers in mind, it's essential to acknowledge that despite a decrease in the frequency of weather damage claims, significant damage costs are still being incurred. Many theories could explain this phenomenon, considering the complex factors at play, such as the severity, timing, and location of weather events, effective mitigation measures, changes in reporting procedures, and localized weather patterns.

Here's a quick glance at the relevant figures for your convenience:

| | Rhineland-Palatinate | Saarland ||----------------------|---------------------|---------|| Vehicle | Car | Car || Weather Event | Storm/Hailstorm/Lightning strike | Storm/Hailstorm/Lightning strike || GDV Location | Mainz | Saarbrücken || Damage | Dent | Lightning Strike || | In 2024 | In 2023 || Vehicles Affected | 6,500 | 1,500 || Damage (Million €) | 18 | 5 || Vehicles Affected | 29,000 | 3,000 || Damage (Million €) | 107 | 9 |

  1. In light of the increasing concerns over natural hazard risks due to climate change as per the GDV's warning, it would be prudent to review both the community policy and employment policy within these regions to ensure adequate planning and response measures are in place to minimize damages and costs.
  2. Given the significant damage costs still being incurred despite a decrease in the frequency of weather damage claims, it might be beneficial to investigate possible adjustments in the current employment policy to encourage more employees with expertise in meteorology, climate change, and risk management to address these complex factors and lessen the financial impact on residents and insurers.
