Reduced packaging sector in Germany anticipated by 2.4% in 2024
In the latest annual report from the Joint Committee of German Packaging Manufacturers (GADV), it has been revealed that the production value of packaging in Germany decreased by 4.1% to €37.1 billion. The report also shows a decrease in packaging production by 2.4% to 17.1 million tonnes.
The GADV, which represents approximately 900 member companies and over 80% of the production value of the German packaging industry, sees itself as a joint voice on material-spanning, economic, and technical issues in the packaging industry. The collective voice includes industry associations such as Aluminium Deutschland, Bundesverband Glasindustrie, Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen, Verband Metallverpackungen, and economic associations of the paper industry.
Paper, cardboard, and carton packaging dominated the market with 47.5%, but saw a decrease of 2.9% in quantity and 7.8% in value. On the other hand, plastic packaging still accounted for the largest share of the production value at 44.6%, although it experienced a decrease of 1.5% in production value despite an increase of 1.1% in quantity.
Metal packaging also saw a decrease, with a 2.4% drop in quantity and a 2.6% decrease in value. Glass packaging experienced a more significant decrease, with a 2.5% drop in quantity and a 10.4% drop in production value.
It is worth noting that the GADV does not provide specific information about the performance of other packaging materials like wood, textile, or bio-based packaging in the report.
The Bundesverband Glasindustrie e.V., a member association of the GADV, has a new chief executive. Christiane Nelles took over the position on July 1, 2025, succeeding Dr. Johann Overath after more than 20 years of leadership.
Aluminum packaging, however, saw an increase, with production growing by 1.3% and recording a plus of 3.8% in production value.
The GADV's focus is on addressing issues that span across different packaging materials, aiming to support the German packaging industry as a whole.
