Renewable Energy's Record 63% Share in 2024 Faces Grid Expansion Challenges
Renewable energy sources accounted for over half of the country's electricity generation in 2024, with a record 63% share. However, the first half of the year brought challenges, including reduced wind and hydropower generation due to weather conditions.
Wind power, a significant contributor, saw a dip in generation due to a windless first quarter. Hydropower also decreased, impacted by a dry start to the year. The government, aiming for 80% green electricity by 2030, faces hurdles in grid expansion, with network operators and infrastructure managers cautioning against outpacing network development. Solar and wind power currently dominate renewable electricity generation, with over 57% of the total electricity coming from these sources. The Federal Minister of Economics and Technology plans to phase out state funding for new, small rooftop solar plants.
Despite the temporary setbacks, renewable energy's share in electricity generation continues to grow, reaching a significant 63% in 2024. The government's ambitious target of 80% by 2030 remains on track, with solar and wind power leading the way. However, the expansion of grids and infrastructure must keep pace with renewable energy growth to ensure a stable and sustainable energy future.
