Online Fashion Retailer Topshop's Website Re-emerges Prior to Relaunch Runway Display: Will It Make a Comeback to the High Street?

Retail giant Topshop's online platform reemerges prior to the relaunch fashion show; speculations arise about its potential re-entry into brick-and-mortar stores.

Topshop Makes a Comeback: Bricks and Mortar Return via Wholesale Partnerships

After a hiatus of four years, Topshop, the once-dominant force of the British high street, is making a comeback. The iconic brand, which was acquired by Asos for £330 million in 2021 following the demise of Arcadia, owned by Philip Green, is set to return to physical retail stores across Britain.

However, Topshop will not be returning to its former flagship store at 214 Oxford Street in London. Instead, the brand's first physical UK location since its closure in 2021 will be a shop-in-shop inside the prestigious Liberty department store in London, launching on August 28, 2025.

This marks a departure from the traditional standalone flagship stores that Topshop was known for. Instead, Topshop will relaunch through wholesale partnerships, starting exclusively with Liberty, located close to its old flagship site. The Liberty store will feature a curated Topshop and Topman fashion edit including tailoring, denim, dresses, and essentials displayed prominently in Liberty’s main atrium and second floor.

Topshop has not yet confirmed plans for reopening its own operated flagship stores, including its iconic Oxford Street store. However, speculation and fan hopes remain high. Instead, the current retail strategy emphasizes an initial semi-permanent presence through the Liberty partnership and wholesale distribution through other European retailers such as Ireland’s McElhinneys, France’s Printemps, and Belgium’s Zeb, with more wholesale rollouts planned over the coming months.

The brand's full 2025 autumn and winter collection will go live on August 16, coinciding with a runway show in Trafalgar Square, London. The newly-launched website offers next day, standard, and Topshop Instant AM pre 12-noon delivery options.

Topshop's popularity waned as it struggled to compete with fast fashion online, losing its younger shoppers to aggressive digital e-tailers like Boohoo and PrettyLittleThing. At its peak, Topshop was raking in about £100 million in profit. However, in 2018, former owners Arcadia revealed it was haemorrhaging cash, reporting a £93.4 million pre-tax loss compared with £164.6 million profit in the year before.

In a move to excite its customers, Topshop has curated a 40-piece range for the relaunched website, which has already been teased since the brand sold a majority stake to a Danish firm last year. Cara Delevingne, a renowned fashion icon, has been instrumental in this curation.

Topshop's return is not without controversy, given the demise of Arcadia and the struggles the brand faced in the years leading up to its sale. However, with its new strategy and fresh approach, Topshop is hoping to recapture the magic that once made it a titan of the British high street.

  1. Topshop's return to the UK high street is part of a new retail strategy that emphasizes wholesale partnerships, such as the one with Liberty department store in London, and distribution through other European retailers in countries like Ireland, France, and Belgium.
  2. The fashion retailer, known for its trendy collections in lifestyle, fashion-and-beauty, and retail industries, has chosen to launch its physical UK presence through these strategic partnerships rather than reopening its own flagship stores.
  3. Despite this departure from its traditional physical store presence, Topshop remains committed to providing a curated selection of its popular items, including denim, dresses, and essentials, to its customers in the UK and beyond, with its full 2025 autumn and winter collection available online.
