Romanian Driver Fined for Smuggling Vintage Tractor into Germany
Customs officers at Lindau recently intercepted an unusual attempt to cross the border. A Romanian national was attempting to drive a vintage tractor into Germany without completing the necessary customs formalities.
The tractor, a relic from 1966, was first registered on New Year's Day of that year. Its agreed purchase price was 1,550 Swiss francs (CHF). The driver, a Romanian national, claimed he was transporting the vehicle on behalf of a friend and intended to complete the customs formalities later in Romania.
The tractor was stopped at the Lindau control unit. Despite the lack of publicly available information about the specific head of the Hauptzollamt Ulm involved, the case was handled promptly. The driver was required to pay import duties of €316 on the spot. After settling the dues, he was allowed to continue his journey.
The vintage tractor, valued at 1,550 CHF, was successfully intercepted and the necessary duties were collected. The Romanian driver, after paying €316, was permitted to proceed with his journey.
