Romania's Grid Connection Auctions Begin in 2025
Transelectrica has unveiled the operational guidelines for assigning grid connection capacity in Romania's upcoming auction-based system. The new mechanism aims to manage grid congestion and prevent speculative projects.
Starting next year, all new generation and energy storage facilities of 5 MW or more will need to secure grid access through annual auctions. The process will be overseen by OPCOM, the company responsible for conducting these news.
The methodology for these yearly auctions was adopted by ANRE in mid-2024. Transelectrica, the company tasked with preparing the implementation and procedure for the auction platform, has now published the implementation procedure. Investors can submit their bids for the allocated capacities between January 19 and the end of February. Transelectrica will publish a list of complete bids by March 15 and identify necessary development works by June 15. Successful bidders will receive signed allocation contracts within five business days after the news.
The first auction sessions will commence on July 1, with each session covering a 10-year allocation period beginning two years after the auction. Transelectrica will outline the available capacity by grid zone for the auction by January 15 of each year. This new system is expected to bring greater transparency and efficiency to Romania's grid connection process.
