Possible fusion of Albrecht-owned discount stores: Will the Aldi chains merge? - Rumors of Albrecht Discount Reunion: Aldi-Fusion in the Spotlight

The Aldi empire, without an Albrecht at the helm for nearly two years, is stirring up whispers of change. Theo junior, the last scion of the founding family actively involved in operations, stepped down from the supervisory board in October 2023. Months before that, Aldi Nord had embarked on a necessary modernization journey - a process essential as the discount group was deemed outdated and antiquated. However, the industry is abuzz with the prospect of the biggest change in its history: a merger with sister company, Aldi Süd.

Merger Talks between Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd?

Inside information from "Wirtschaftswochen" suggests that the owner families of the two discount stores are engaged in clandestine merger negotiations. Family insiders are cited as the source. The owners are the Heister family, who control Aldi Süd through foundations, and two branches of the Albrecht family, who own Aldi Nord through foundations.

The specifics of the proposed merger are still being worked out, and multiple scenarios are under consideration, including a merger of the two companies under the roof of a joint holding company with shares equally distributed among the foundations of the various family branches.

Initially, the families aimed to achieve a "reunion" of the two Aldis by the end of the year, as indicated by sources close to the families. However, time is growing short, and a merger by the end of December seems unrealistic, according to family circles. Neither Aldi Nord nor Aldi Süd have publicly commented on the plans.

Retail experts have long predicted the two Aldis would merge or at least consider such a move, as eliminating duplicate structures could result in substantial cost savings. As a first step, it is now planned to merge the software and IT departments.

The Albrecht Family's Feud

In the past, a merger has been foiled by a dispute between two Albrecht branches from the north. However, the Heisters from the south have made a peace agreement a prerequisite for the merger, as revealed by "Wirtschaftswochen" research.

The dispute between the two northern branches centered on control and voting rights in the foundations through which the two families hold Aldi Nord. The conflict escalated and was eventually resolved in court. Since then, at least the power ratios in the foundations have been resolved, according to family insiders.

Aldi's owner families are notorious for their resolute secrecy. Rarely, if ever, do internal matters become public knowledge. That potential merger talks have surfaced now is quite a sensation. However, the economic situation of Aldi Nord is known to be precarious, especially in comparison to Aldi Süd and Lidl, the country's largest discount store. In France, the company is reporting losses, and it has even withdrawn from Denmark.

Aldi's Market Position

Aldi Nord, Aldi Süd, and Lidl, with a combined 7,400 stores and around 22% market share, currently rank fourth in the German food chain market. Lidl occupies third position with 3,200 stores and 18% market share. Leading the pack are Edeka (11,000 stores, 26% market share) and Rewe (3,700 stores, 21% market share).

Such a merger could have profound effects on their operations and market share, including increased operational efficiency, increased market presence, enhanced competitiveness, and potential job impacts. However, a decision on the merger is not expected to be implemented soon, as per recent reports. Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have been successful in their separate operations, and any decision to merge would need to weigh the strategic implications for their business model and customer base.
