RWE's Gwynt y Môr Wind Farm Powers Co-op's UK Stores in 7-Year PPA

RWE's Gwynt y Môr wind farm, a 576 MW offshore powerhouse in the Irish Sea, has inked a seven-year deal with British Co-op Group. The agreement will see the wind farm's clean electricity powering Co-op's UK stores and operations.

Inaugurated in 2015, Gwynt y Môr is owned by a consortium comprising RWE, Stadtwerke München GmbH, and Macquarie GIG. It boasts 160 Siemens Gamesa 3.6 MW wind turbines, connected to the National Grid via assets owned by GYM OFTO.

The PPA, signed by RWE, will supply Co-op with 33 GWh of clean electricity annually. This is enough to power around 140 of its food stores each year. Heather Thomas, Co-op's Group Property & Sustainability Director, emphasised the role of businesses in greening the grid. Co-op, having its net-zero targets validated in March 2024, aims to achieve net-zero across its operations by 2035 and its entire business by 2040. The PPA aligns with these ambitious goals and Co-op's commitment to renewable energy and emission cuts.

The PPA between RWE's Gwynt y Môr wind farm and Co-op Group is a significant step towards greening the UK's energy supply. It demonstrates Co-op's dedication to sustainability and RWE's commitment to renewable energy production.
