Train service on the Saxony-Franconia Main Line temporarily suspended. - Section of the Saxony-Franconia primary route blocked
The Saxon-Franconian Main Line will undergo a significant transformation beginning August 8, 2025, as Deutsche Bahn and local authorities have announced a complete closure to train traffic for a period of two months. The closure, which will last until October 26, 2025, is part of a larger €330 million investment aimed at modernizing the infrastructure.
During this time, passengers should expect extensive timetable changes, train cancellations, and replacement bus services between key points including Altenburg, Schmölln, Gößnitz, Werdau, Glauchau, and Zwickau. This closure will also affect several important train lines, including the S5/S5X, RE1, City-Bahn Chemnitz with RB 37, and RE3 until September 18.
Alternative transportation options will be available to maintain connectivity during the service interruptions. Replacement bus services will operate between the affected stations, and passengers should anticipate longer travel times due to these alternative arrangements and adjusted schedules.
The modernization work includes the construction of new tracks, platforms, bridges, and the installation of new signaling systems. These improvements are expected to increase train speeds and reduce travel times by mid-2026. For instance, trains on the Dresden-Hof route could see a reduction of up to 50 minutes in travel time.
Fifty-two stations and stops along the Saxon-Franconian Main Line, including Altenburg, Werdau, Glauchau, Leipzig, Zwickau, Schmölln, and sections in Erfurt and Weimar (Thuringia), will undergo renovation. Additionally, thirty-two electronic signal boxes will be constructed as part of this project.
After the expansion, trains on the main line could potentially travel at 160 km/h, an increase from the current 120 km/h. The Saxon-Franconian Main Line, which spans approximately 288 kilometers and connects several federal states, will see approximately 850 kilometers of track rebuilt as part of this project.
This information reflects the planned closure and alternative arrangements announced by Deutsche Bahn and local authorities as of July 2025. Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and stay updated on the latest developments to ensure a smooth travel experience during this period of modernization.
- The Commission, in light of the ongoing infrastructure improvements, might consider exploring possibilities to streamline the finance aspect of the project, for instance by collaborating with the industry to secure funds for the common system of value added tax (VAT) proposed for the beef and veal sector.
- With the disruption in public-transit due to the Saxon-Franconian Main Line modernization, it would be beneficial for the local authorities to invest in improving transportation alternatives such as bus services and potentially even cycling infrastructure, allowing for smoother transportation experiences during the closure period.
