Get Ready to Spend: The Unavoidable Truth About Driver's License Costs

In the ever-growing world of expenses, one thing remains certain - if you're aiming to get behind the wheel, you're going to have to dive into your wallet. Here's the lowdown on why that's the case and how to navigate the financial hurdles.

In 2025, the situation isn't much different in Germany compared to other parts of the world. The costs associated with obtaining a driver's license have been steadily creeping up, putting a bigger strain on wallets each year. According to the Federal Statistical Office, driving school and driver's license fees shot up by a whopping 5.8% in 2024 compared to the previous year, while consumer prices as a whole only increased by a meager 2.2%. So, it's safe to say that the costs of getting a license have been growing at a much faster rate.

The Cost Breakdown: It's Not as Simple as You Think

These days, shelling out around 4,000 euros for a driver's license isn't unheard of. But before you start sweating bullets, it's worth remembering that the specifics of how much you'll end up paying can vary greatly depending on a variety of factors.

On one hand, the fees for the tests are fixed by law. On the other hand, driving schools have the freedom to set their own prices for theory and practical hours. Factors like the cost of instructors, fuel, and overheads all play a part in shaping the final cost. It's also worth keeping in mind that the price you pay will depend largely on how much practice you need and how successful you are during your tests.

The Auto Club Deutschland (ADAC) provides a helpful illustration of the cost range for first-time drivers. Assuming you pick the lower end for each cost factor and manage to pass the practical test after 15 practice hours, you can expect to shell out around 2,500 euros. On the flip side, if you set the upper values and require 25 training driving hours, the cost climbs to around 4,500 euros.

As you can see, the range is substantial. So, it's essential to know your options and learn how to find a good driving school that offers quality training at an affordable price.

Shopping Around: A smart move

From a cost perspective, it's advisable to opt for a driving school that charges a lower rate per driving hour, rather than one that offers a lower basic fee. The basic fee is only charged once, while driving hours add up quickly. Some driving schools also offer complete packages that include vision tests, first aid courses, and more - all for a potentially cheaper price and more convenience.

The ADAC offers a set of guideline values from the Federal Association of Driving Instructors (BVF) to help you compare driving schools in terms of costs:

  • The basic fee should not be more than ten times the price of a regular driving hour.
  • A special drive should not cost more than one and a half times the price of a regular driving hour.
  • The fees for presenting the theoretical and practical exams should not be more than five times the price of a regular driving hour.
  • The partial basic fee - if charged by a driving school after failing the theory exam - should not be more than five times the price of a regular driving hour.

Evaluating Quality: It's More Than Just the Price Tag

Price isn't the only factor to consider when choosing a driving school. The quality of training matters just as much, if not more. The Auto Club Europa (ACE) suggests that it's always a good idea to ask around and get recommendations from other drivers who have gone through the same process. Looking up online reviews can also be helpful.

According to the ACE, there are some key questions to ask when evaluating a driving school:

  • Is the atmosphere at the school collaborative and friendly?
  • Do the instructors seem helpful and knowledgeable?
  • Does the same instructor typically handle both theory and practical training?
  • Are all questions answered clearly, thoroughly, and friendly before you commit to the school?

Choosing the Right Classes: Finding the Goldilocks Zone

When it comes to picking the right classes, the question of whether a regular car driver's license (Class B) is sufficient often arises. Depending on your needs, you might need additional classes that cover trailers, motorcycles, or other vehicles. The driving school you choose can help you make an informed decision about the best classes for your needs, potentially saving you money in the long run by avoiding unnecessary training.

Automatic or Manual Transmission: Choosing Wisely

If you happen to know that you'll only be driving automatic cars in the future, you could potentially save some money by starting your training on an automatic vehicle in driving school, potentially sparing you the practice hours required to learn to drive and shift gears manually. However, this decision should be made carefully. Those who only learn to drive with an automatic transmission and pass the test will only be allowed to drive automatic cars later on. This code 78 on the driver's license indicates this restriction.

Those who realize during their training that a restriction to "only automatic" is not enough can switch to the extension B197. This requires ten hours of 45-minute training on a manual vehicle and a 15-minute test drive. It's essential to ensure that the change reaches the driver's license office in time before the practical test. There, the code in the application must be changed from 78 to 197. This enables you to take the test with an automatic car and later drive both types.

Good preparation can increase your chances of passing the test on the first attempt. The ACE advises against taking driving school lightly and instead recommends diligent preparation, plenty of practice, and enough time. It's also advisable to avoid taking large gaps between driving lessons to prevent forgetting what you've learned due to lack of driving practice.

In principle, the practical test can only be taken at the place of your main residence or at the place of school or vocational training, studies, or employment, according to the ACE. Those who want to obtain the license elsewhere, typically for cost reasons, must have their main residence there for at least 185 days. An exception are students and trainees abroad who can keep their residence in Germany. They can obtain the license if they have lived there for at least six months. An EU driver's license does not need to be converted and is valid throughout the EU. However, the language barrier and a possibly different traffic culture should not be underestimated, the automobile club warns.
