Solingen Offers Free Energy Education to Primary Schools
Solingen's City Works, in collaboration with the German Environmental Action Association (DUA), is offering free energy education to local primary schools this academic year. The initiative aims to raise children's awareness about energy and the environment.
Since 1958, the DUA has been teaching environmental education in kindergartens, primary, and sometimes secondary schools. In Solingen, the DUA is supported by local environmental organizations, the city administration, and educational institutions. Katrin Schirrmacher, spokesperson for Solingen's City Works, emphasizes the importance of energy education for children's environmental awareness.
The energy education session covers a range of topics, including the origin of electricity, the role of CO2 in climate change, and energy-saving methods for school and home. The goal is to teach children about electricity and heating in an engaging way, both at school and at home. Mechthild Köhncke from DUA uses visual experiments to make the information more accessible and interesting for students. This semester, twelve primary schools in Solingen have booked the energy education offer for their fourth graders.
The free energy education program, offered by Solingen's City Works and the DUA, is expected to benefit over a hundred students this semester. By learning about energy and its impact on the environment, these children can grow into responsible and eco-conscious citizens.
