Economic Association in Southern Hamburg: Expansion, Networking, and Advocacy

Established in 1947, the Economic Association in southern Hamburg has approximately 270 member companies from the Harburg region and surrounding districts. With around 40,000 employees working across these companies, the association serves as a vital interest representation and a platform for exchange and networking in the region.

Recently, the association has addressed several key issues. In November, it offered its expertise on the future of Karstadt Harburg, a vacant property in the city center of Harburg, following its purchase by the city of Hamburg. Additionally, the association has emphasized its stance on commercial and industrial areas as part of the ongoing "Harburg Vision."

In terms of political matters, the Economic Association has voiced expectations for a quick appointment of a new head of the district administration, six months after the district assembly elections and three months after the resignation of Sophie Fredenhagen. It has also welcomed a new face to its business office, Nuray Schulz, who will take over from Mrs. Muthreja starting from February.

The economic evening at the Privathotel Lindtner, considered the most important social event in southern Hamburg, saw the attendance of around 270 high-ranking guests from business and politics in January. Rolf Buch, CEO of Vonovia, addressed the gathering, as the company owns and rents more than half a million apartments in Germany.

Philipp Schendel joined the advisory board of the Economic Association in southern Hamburg in a move welcomed by the association. The golf tournament of the Economic Association, held for the tenth time in cooperation with the Hamburger Sparkasse, attracted 100 participants.

The manufacturing, processing, and craft industries in southern Hamburg continue to expand in contrast to the real estate industry, which faces simultaneous burdens of costs, interest rates, and selling prices.

The Economic Association recently conducted a survey on the commercial space situation in southern Hamburg to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current situation and identify targeted measures for promoting economic development in the region. The survey will run until April 8, 2024, with the results to be made available after careful evaluation.

The Economic Association has voiced its support for a demonstration against the far-right political party AfD following revelations of a secret meeting between party functionaries and members of the Identitarian Movement.

The "TU in Dialogue - Navigating the Mobility Turnaround for Southern Hamburg" event, organized by the TU, the Economic Association, and Harburg-Marketing, addressed the need to develop forward-looking solutions for sustainable mobility in the region. The event emphasized the importance of planning and securing funding for sustainable mobility initiatives.

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, District Office Harburg, and Sparkasse Harburg-Buxtehude have provided support for the 6th phase of the Harburg Vision, which aims to facilitate the region's transition towards climate neutrality.

Local politics, the real estate industry, and road development have all been topics of discussion at recent events organized by the Economic Association.

The Economic Association maintains an active presence in the region, engaging in dialogues with relevant stakeholders, conducting surveys, and promoting sustainability and economic development initiatives.
