Steel manufacturer EMSTEEL attains title of Sustainability Champion for a second year straight in 2025.

EMSTEEL, a leading steel producer in the Middle East, has been honoured with the prestigious title of a 2025 Steel Sustainability Champion by the World Steel Association (worldsteel). The accolade was presented at the worldsteel Special General Meeting in Sydney, Australia.

Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group CEO of EMSTEEL, expressed pride in the achievement, stating that it reaffirms EMSTEEL's continued efforts to lead in sustainability and pave the way for a greener future in steel manufacturing. The recognition also underscores EMSTEEL's role in paving the way for a greener future in the steel industry.

The recognition comes as EMSTEEL made notable strides in reducing its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions intensity by 23% in 2024. This significant progress towards achieving net-zero emissions was underscored. The company's leadership role in decarbonising the steel sector is solidified by the recognition.

EMSTEEL's approach focuses on clean energy transition, material reutilization, technology innovation, and sustainable financing to achieve a 40% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 (from a 2019 baseline), significantly surpassing the UAE’s national target, and aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.

The company implements a comprehensive five-pillar sustainable decarbonisation strategy. This strategy includes carbon capture technology, using 100% clean electricity by 2030, enhancing energy efficiency, increasing scrap metal usage, and adopting green hydrogen. In 2023, EMSTEEL launched the region’s first hydrogen-based steel pilot project with Masdar, replacing fossil fuels in steel production processes.

Additional elements supporting their sustainability efforts are the achievement of ResponsibleSteel™ Core Site Certification, the first in the MENA region, demonstrating adherence to global ESG standards and responsible steel production processes. EMSTEEL also launched a Green Finance Framework to issue green bonds and loans that fund low-carbon steel and cement projects, reinforcing their net-zero goals. The company participates in circular economy initiatives such as using steel slag-derived materials to produce lower-carbon cement, supporting their broader decarbonization across steel and cement value chains.

By the end of 2023, EMSTEEL's total Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions had reached 4.5 million tonnes of CO2. Despite this, the company remains committed to its sustainability efforts, reiterating its pioneering role in decarbonising the sector. The recognition highlights EMSTEEL's pioneering role in sustainability and underscores its ongoing commitment to leading the way in sustainable steel manufacturing.

In conclusion, EMSTEEL's recognition as a 2025 Steel Sustainability Champion underscores its significant progress in sustainability and its leadership role in decarbonising the steel sector. The company's approach focuses on clean energy transition, material reutilization, technology innovation, and sustainable financing, aiming for a 40% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050.
