Stolen Lexus SUVs: Two Models from the Luxury Brands Go Missing
In a series of car thefts that occurred over the weekend of 21st and 22nd June, two luxury Lexus SUVs were stolen in both Cologne city center and the Lindenthal district. The stolen vehicles are a grey Lexus NX350H and a black Lexus RX450H+.
The first incident involved the Lexus NX350H, which was parked in Aachener Glacis in Cologne city center on Friday (20 June) at around 20:30. It was discovered stolen on Monday morning (23 June). The second stolen car, the black Lexus RX450H+, was parked on a company parking lot in Cologne-Lindenthal on Saturday morning (21 June). It was also discovered missing on Monday (23 June).
Both models are hybrid vehicles, known for their luxury features and advanced technology, including keyless entry systems. These systems, while convenient, are vulnerable to relay attacks, where thieves use devices to boost the signal from the key fob to the vehicle, even if the fob is inside the owner's home.
To prevent such thefts, experts advise taking the following precautions:
1. Use a Signal-Blocking Pouch: Keep your key fob in a signal-blocking pouch to prevent thieves from amplifying its signal. 2. Store Keys in a Safe Place: Keep your key fob in a secure location, such as a metal cabinet or a safe. 3. Use a Key Fob Signal Blocker Device: Some devices can be plugged into your car's OBD port to detect and prevent relay attacks. 4. Fit a Steering Lock: Although old-fashioned, a visible steering lock can deter thieves who prefer easier targets. 5. Always Lock Your Garage: If you park your vehicle in a garage, ensure it is locked and secure. 6. Regularly Update Vehicle Software: Manufacturers often release updates to improve security. Ensure your vehicle's software is up-to-date. 7. Use GPS Tracking Devices: Installing a GPS tracking device can help locate your vehicle if it is stolen. 8. Consider Additional Security Measures: Immobilizers and alarm systems can provide additional layers of protection.
