Study: Businesses Struggle with Surge in Organisational Complexity

A recent study by acatech, published in the 2025 Monitoring Report, reveals a surge in organisational complexity among businesses. The majority of companies have grappled with this issue over the past three years, with increasing customer demands and regulation cited as key drivers.

The report highlights that 34% of businesses are tackling complexity by simplifying their services or product portfolios. Similarly, 34% are focusing on streamlining their IT systems, reflecting the significant impact increased organisational complexity has on this department (43%). Despite these efforts, only 22% of senior executives express confidence in their organisations' preparedness for future complexity. Alarmingly, 24% of companies describe their current state as 'complex and chaotic'.

The acatech report underscores the pressing need for organisations to address rising complexity, with most businesses struggling to keep pace. While strategies such as simplifying services and IT systems are being employed, the majority of senior executives acknowledge the challenge ahead in preparing for the future.
