Survey shows potential for European consumers to bypass American goods due to Trump's trade taxes

Amidst the escalating trade disputesbetween the U.S. and Europe, numerous Europeans are rethinking their commitment to purchasing American products entirely.

Many Europeans Willing to Ditch US Products Amid Trade Tensions

Survey shows potential for European consumers to bypass American goods due to Trump's trade taxes

In an informal, no-holds-barred chat, here's the lowdown on the hot topic of European consumers moving away from U.S. products.

Half of Europeans say they'd rather pass on U.S. brands, no matter the tariff heights. That's according to a survey by the European Central Bank (ECB).

President Donald Trump's got the U.S. slapping a base tariff of 10% on most trading partners, including the EU. But European consumers aren't just bracing for higher prices – they're reconsidering buying American goods altogether.

With the trade tensions between the U.S. and Europe brewing, this ECB survey can be a game-changer. It suggests that the tariffs imposed by Trump could lead to a significant, lasting change in European consumer habits.

The survey, published on Wednesday and involving some 19,000 participants, asked how likely people would be to go for alternatives from other countries in case of tariffs of 5, 10, or 20%. The median response for "substitution" (i.e., replacement) was a robust 80 out of 100 points, signaling a strong preference to shift away from U.S. products and services.

Interestingly, preferences rather than price were the main reason for many to move away from U.S. products, with an average substitution value of 95 for that group, and it remained consistent regardless of the tariff level. Additionally, households with higher incomes were the most likely to consider changing brands, likely because of preferences rather than price considerations.

So what does this mean? It seems that the tariffs are prompting large groups of consumers to reconsider their purchases. This could indicate a "sign of a possible long-term structural shift in consumer preferences away from U.S. products and brands."

The survey came out just a few weeks after Trump announced a base tariff of 20% on most trading partners, including Europe. The EU retaliated with tariffs of 25%, but after Trump reduced the tariffs for Europe to 10%, the EU suspended them for 90 days.

However, the reprieve didn't deter the EU from considering more extensive retaliatory measures. These include seeking alternative defense suppliers, imposing stricter counter-tariffs, and reducing dependence on U.S. technologies and intellectual property protection. Over two dozen European and Canadian officials familiar with the discussions confirmed this.

While U.S. brands are already feeling the heat, with Tesla sales in Europe falling by 42% in the first two months of 2025, and consumer boycotts of U.S. whiskey and travel to America, it remains to be seen how this will all play out. One thing's for sure – the relationship between the U.S. and Europe could be entering a whole new era.
