Technology for Tailgating Prevention: Hyundai Mobis' Proactive Driving Approach

Hyundai Mobis, a leading South Korean auto parts giant, has taken a significant step forward in vehicle safety with the unveiling of a new technology designed to tackle aggressive tailgaters in highway driving. This innovative system, part of a growing interest in holistic vehicle safety systems, includes rear-vehicle awareness [1][2].

The system, which uses a suite of sensors and control algorithms, detects fast-approaching vehicles from the rear and takes action to maintain a safe distance. The technology integrates rear-mounted radar sensors with forward-facing cameras and combines this input with Smart Cruise Control (SCC) functionality [3].

When the system is active, and a tailgating vehicle comes within approximately 10 meters (approximately 11 yards), it responds in two stages. In the Warning Stage, the system alerts the driver through audible beeps and visual signals on the instrument cluster to indicate that a vehicle is dangerously close behind [4]. If the unsafe proximity continues beyond the warning, the vehicle autonomously accelerates to increase the gap from the aggressive tailgater, provided the front camera confirms that there is enough space ahead to safely speed up [4].

This approach is significant because, unlike many existing rear-end collision systems that only warn drivers or tighten seatbelts, Hyundai Mobis’ technology takes an active defensive driving measure by controlling the vehicle’s speed to prevent a collision rather than just preparing for one [5].

Jung Soo-kyung, executive vice president and head of the automotive electronics business unit at Hyundai Mobis, stated that the company will actively protect the safety of mobility users [6]. The innovation promises a high-tech solution for drivers familiar with the unsettling experience of being tailgated at high speeds.

Hyundai Mobis is not stopping at this development. The company is expanding the capabilities of its safety system to include automatic lane changes to evade tailgaters or erratic vehicles, enhancing the system’s ability to protect drivers by predicting and reacting to threats from behind more dynamically [7].

With this new safety system, cars may soon not only watch the road ahead but also keep an eye on what's coming up behind, marking a new chapter in automotive vigilance [8]. Hyundai Mobis's investment in sensor technology, software development, and autonomous driving systems positions it well for future advancements in vehicle safety [9]. The new safety system is expected to be available in vehicles in the future.
