Tesla and Chery, two prominent automakers, have shared their latest export figures. Tesla's Shanghai plant exported 271,095 vehicles in 2022. Meanwhile, Chery, China's top passenger car exporter, saw a significant increase in its exports last year.
Chery's exports in 2022 reached 452,000 vehicles, making up 14.5 percent of China's total vehicle exports of 3.11 million. This impressive number reflects a 68 percent increase from the previous year. The brand has maintained its lead as China's top passenger car exporter for 20 consecutive years.
In January 2023, Chery continued its robust export activity. A ship carrying 3,286 vehicles set sail for Europe on January 21. During the Chinese New Year holiday, Chery delivered 24,000 vehicles to 11 countries. In total, Chery has exported over 2.4 million vehicles, accounting for 20 percent of all Chinese auto exports.
Looking at the market trends, retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China in January 2023 are expected to be 360,000 units, up 1.8 percent year-on-year but down 43.8 percent from December. Overall, China's retail sales of passenger vehicles in January 2023 are expected to be 1.36 million units, down 34.6 percent year-on-year.
Tesla and Chery's export figures highlight the growing global demand for their vehicles. Despite the expected dip in sales during the Chinese New Year, Chery's continued export activities and market share indicate a strong global presence for the brand.
