Tesla Launches Campaign to Protect Canada's Electric Vehicle Standard

Tesla has launched a campaign, OurElectricFuture.ca, to preserve the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard (EVAS) in Canada. The company fears potential government changes that could weaken the regulation, which aims to increase electric vehicle (EV) sales and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Introduced in 2021, the EVAS requires automakers to gradually increase EV sales. Tesla argues that a larger supply of new EVs leads to a more affordable used electric car market. The company is urging Canadian drivers to support the EVAS, addressing both the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, and the Premier Minister, Mark Carney.

The campaign aims to send letters to local Members of Parliament and dispel myths about the EVAS. Initially, the standard targeted 14% of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2026. Tesla estimates that a strong EVAS could cut lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions from Canada's road transport sector by 82% by 2050. EMC, an industry group, estimates the EVAS protects over 130,000 jobs and could create up to 600,000 more in the electric car industry by 2035. Weakening the EVAS could reduce job creation by nearly a quarter million positions.

Tesla's campaign, OurElectricFuture.ca, seeks to maintain the EVAS and its potential benefits. These include increased electric car affordability, significant emission reductions, and substantial job creation in Canada's electric mobility sector.
