Tesla Expands Presence in India with New Experience Center in Delhi

Tesla, the American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is set to open a new Experience Center in Delhi's Aerocity district near IGI Airport in August. This development is part of Tesla's aggressive scaling strategy in India, one of the world's largest automotive markets.

The news of Tesla's expansion in India comes with hopes of making its offerings more competitively priced in the Indian market. Currently, the import taxes on fully built Tesla vehicles range between 70% and 100%, making them significantly expensive. However, Tesla is in discussions with the Indian government to secure a reduction in these import duties, with a goal of a tax rate closer to 10%.

The opening of the Delhi showroom is a significant step towards Tesla's ambitious plans for its operations in India. The company aims to deploy Superchargers and destination chargers across key urban centers to support its growing customer base. Additionally, Tesla plans to open service centers and warehouses to complement its existing Pune-based engineering hub and Bengaluru corporate office.

The Aerocity showroom in Delhi is the second of several planned Tesla Experience Centers across India. The first-ever Experience Center in India was officially opened earlier this month in Mumbai. Indian tech and EV enthusiast, Ishan Agarwal, shared the first image of the under-construction showroom on social media platform X.

However, Tesla's operations in India are not limited to showrooms. The company is also setting up a service center, warehouse, and deploying charging infrastructure to cater to its Indian customers.

India maintains a high import tariff (around 70%) on fully built cars priced below $40,000, impacting Tesla's pricing. Indian officials, including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, have stated that tax concessions or import duty reductions for Tesla will only be granted if Tesla sets up local manufacturing, supporting the government’s "Make in India" initiative. Tesla's negotiations and plans for a local factory have faced challenges and delays, with a 2024 visit by Elon Musk postponed due to stalled talks.

Domestic Indian EV manufacturers strongly oppose relaxing import duties without local manufacturing to protect the domestic industry. As of mid-2025, no reduction timelines have been announced publicly, but Tesla is currently offering the Model Y as its first vehicle for Indian customers.

In conclusion, the opening of the Delhi showroom is a significant move for Tesla in India, marking its continued commitment to the Indian market. While the import taxes on Tesla vehicles remain high, the company is actively engaging with the Indian government to secure a reduction and establish local manufacturing facilities, which could potentially make its offerings more affordable for Indian customers.
