Tesla showcases footage of FSD-assisted ride-hailing trials in Austin, signaling the approaching Robotaxi debut
Tesla's much-anticipated Robotaxi service, powered by Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, is making significant strides towards becoming a reality. The service, which features a two-seater Cybercab with no steering wheel or pedals, is currently in early-stage deployment in Austin, Texas, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Tesla aims to expand the service rapidly, targeting coverage for about half of the U.S. population by the end of 2025, subject to necessary regulatory approvals. To support this scale, the company plans to produce 2-4 million purpose-built "Cybercabs" annually starting next year.
The Robotaxi service leverages Tesla's "vision-only" autonomous driving approach, relying primarily on cameras and AI rather than LiDAR and detailed pre-mapping used by rivals like Waymo. Tesla vehicles can now drive themselves off the assembly line, and there are plans for direct-to-customer autonomous vehicle deliveries in select regions by year-end 2025.
Regulatory hurdles remain the main obstacle for wider rollout and true "FSD Unsupervised" capability. Tesla is actively engaging with regulators in multiple markets. In the U.S., the company is expanding geographically and hiring vehicle operators in states including New York, Nevada, Arizona, and Florida to support Robotaxi service and Autopilot testing. In Europe, Tesla is negotiating with the Netherlands and aiming to secure approvals from the EU and UNECE. China presents a complex regulatory environment, requiring approval and testing for each update and vehicle hardware type.
Despite competition from companies like Alphabet’s Waymo, which currently leads with fully driverless Level 4 services in multiple cities and hundreds of thousands of rides weekly, Tesla remains confident in reaching broad availability. The company is currently piloting the service with a select group of Tesla employees, with a driver behind the wheel during the tests.
A recent video shared by Tesla AI on Twitter showcases the operation of the Robotaxi app and features riders in a refreshed Model 3. The service is also being used to develop and validate FSD networks, the mobile app, vehicle allocation, mission control, and remote assistance operations. Tesla is also welcoming private Tesla owners to enroll their vehicles in the Robotaxi program when they are not personally using them.
The June launch date for the Robotaxi service is getting closer. The service expansion includes private Tesla owners enrolling their vehicles in the program, although this fact is not explicitly stated in the text. The service is part of Tesla's efforts to advance its autonomous driving technology.
Tesla is offering three months of Full Self-Driving (FSD) to those who buy a Tesla using a referral link and enjoy the content. The Robotaxi app allows passengers to control the trip from a touchscreen at the back. The latest announcement makes the Robotaxi service more real, and the service has already logged over 1,500 trips and 15,000 miles on the road.
