Tesla's Update on April 25th: Unveiling of Model Y for Pre-order, Customs Woes, Digital Vehicle Record Introduction, and Musk's Address

In the world of electric vehicles (EVs), Tesla continues to make headlines. The American automaker has found itself embroiled in a controversy, yet its European operations remain strong and its production continues to expand.

Recent developments have seen Tesla file a lawsuit against the European Union's electric vehicle tariffs, aiming to challenge the imposed 9 percent rate on its Shanghai factory's exports to the EU. The company has successfully negotiated a reduction to 7.8 percent, demonstrating its commitment to the European market.

However, the spotlight has also been on Tesla's German Gigafactory, following an incident in January 2025. Elon Musk's gesture, which some claimed resembled a Nazi salute, sparked viral social media controversy and criticism, particularly in Germany. Musk denied the allegations, calling it "media propaganda" and an "awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm." The Anti-Defamation League and public figures such as William Shatner have since come to Musk's defence, helping to mitigate the accusations. Notably, no official legal investigation into the incident has been reported as of early August 2025.

Amidst this controversy, the European automotive industry is experiencing a surge in EV sales. The German VDA association predicts a 75 percent increase in electric car sales in Germany this year, up to 666,000 units, and an 8 percent increase in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales compared to 2024. The industry is expected to reach an electric car share of 24 percent in Europe by 2025, marking a significant increase from the previous year.

Registrations of electric cars in Germany fell by 41 percent in 2024, but the situation appears to be improving. Tesla's Gigafactory in Brandenburg is producing Model Y for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, contributing to the recovery. The new Model Y is now available for Western markets, with deliveries starting in March.

In the US, Tesla has increased the price of the new Model Y by $12,000 compared to the previous version, a move that has raised eyebrows. The refreshed Model Y is available as the base version in China, with a slightly higher price compared to before. The production of the Model Y's successor, internally referred to as the Model Y Juniper, has begun in all four of Tesla's electric vehicle factories worldwide.

Despite the controversy and price increase, Tesla's European sales have shown signs of resilience. The company recorded a disproportionate drop of 13.1 percent in Europe in 2024, but managed to increase its European sales in December by 5.9 percent. The EU will impose fines on manufacturers for excessive CO2 emissions from their new car fleet if they do not significantly increase their sales of purely electric vehicles this year.

However, not all news is positive for the EV industry. Europe-wide electric car sales fell by 5.9 percent last year, according to ACEA. Domestic production of electric vehicles and PHEVs in Germany is set to reach a new record: up 24 percent to 1.7 million units.

The controversy surrounding Elon Musk's gesture at Tesla's German Gigafactory remains a topic of debate, but the company's commitment to the European market and its continued production and sales of electric vehicles are clear indicators of its resilience and dedication to the EV revolution.
