Train emergency prolonged - Children among those hurt

In the small town of Riedlingen, southeastern Baden-Württemberg, a tragic train accident occurred on Sunday evening. The derailment involved a Frozen Regional Express train, consisting of two vehicles of type 612, resulting in three fatalities.

The recovery operation is underway, but the completion time cannot be predicted due to the complex terrain and the nature of the accident.

Initial findings suggest that a landslide caused by an overflowing sewer shaft was the cause of the derailment. The public prosecutor's office in Ravensburg has initiated a death investigation procedure.

A total of 50 people were on board the train, and the number of injured has been revised to 36, including two children aged 7 and 13. Fortunately, three people who were initially taken to the hospital have been released uninjured, and a mix-up in the identification of two individuals has been rectified.

Deutsche Bahn, the German railway company, has taken immediate action, involving both criminal and geological experts in the investigation to determine the causes of the accident. Preventive measures will likely include infrastructure upgrades, enhanced safety protocols, and improved monitoring technologies, as is typical in such situations.

Since 2017, Deutsche Bahn has been using drones to monitor vegetation on and around the tracks, and DB InfraGO, a daughter company, checks the stability of the tracks using measurement vehicles and sensors.

Recovered vehicles will be transported to a company site in the region by a low loader, while a special recovery plan is being developed for the last carriage.

As the investigation continues, no specific crime is being investigated, but potential indicators are being examined.

A memorial service is planned for Friday, providing an opportunity for the community to come together and mourn the loss of life.

Heavy rainfall could cause landslides to occur more frequently nationwide, according to an expert, emphasising the need for continued vigilance and investment in infrastructure and safety measures.

For the latest updates, we recommend consulting official Deutsche Bahn press releases, the German Federal Railway Authority (Eisenbahn-Bundesamt), or reliable news sources covering transportation safety developments as of July 2025.
