Train passengers endured a sweltering ride during a heatwave as they traveled on a high-speed train without air conditioning. One passenger expressed their distress, stating, "I thought I was going to fall among the apples."
In the sweltering heat of recent days, passengers traveling by TGV have faced discomfort due to air conditioning failures on some high-speed trains. The issues seem to be linked to technical electrical faults, power supply problems, and aging or poorly maintained train equipment, struggling to cope under extreme heat conditions.
According to SNCF, about 20 Intercity trains have been taken out of service due to aging problems, causing disruptions in traffic. However, the national rail operator has stated that there are no more air conditioner breakdowns on TGVs during heatwaves than usual.
Passengers like Cécile have expressed concern about the heat inside the train wagons, finding it unbearable. She is traveling with her cat in a box and is due to get off at Nîmes in two hours.
Other passengers, such as Sylvie and Serge, have faced similar challenges. They expected their vehicle to be air-conditioned but have had to endure the heat. Fortunately, they are getting off at the first stop, Valence, where their son is waiting for them.
The Canicule info service hotline (0800 06 66 66) is available for advice on dealing with the heat, and tips can also be found on the ministry's website.
These issues appear to be part of larger power or infrastructure problems that require major repairs, affecting multiple high-speed services like Eurostar, TGV inOui, and Ouigo. Passengers have reported that some trains have worn or poorly maintained equipment, leading to faulty or ineffective air conditioning systems during hot weather. The demand on the system during heatwaves likely exacerbates such faults.
As temperatures continue to soar, SNCF is working diligently to address these issues and ensure a comfortable journey for all passengers.
