Trump's Brazil Meddling Sparks Backlash as Lula Stands Firm
US President Donald Trump has been meddling in Brazil's justice system, supporting former President Jair Bolsonaro, for several months. His actions, including imposing tariffs and sanctions, have been condemned by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other officials.
Trump's interference began with a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods and extended to sanctions against Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes under the Magnitsky Act. Moraes is overseeing Bolsonaro's trial. Lula, in response, called Trump's actions 'unacceptable' and refused to negotiate as a 'small country'.
The Trump administration has been pressuring Brazil to halt Bolsonaro's trial and ease tech regulation. However, a survey by AtlasIntel and Bloomberg shows Lula would win a second round against any of the seven most likely right-wing candidates in the 2026 presidential polls. Lula's approval ratings have also surpassed his disapproval for the first time in 2025, following Trump's executive order.
Trump's interference in Brazil's legal system has sparked a backlash. Lula, supported by Brazilian officials, has stood firm against Trump's demands. The Brazilian people, as reflected in Lula's rising approval ratings, appear to back their president's stance in the presidential polls today.
