Trump's Energy Shift: Solar for All Terminated, Lava Ridge Wind Project Halted

President Donald Trump's energy policies have taken a significant turn with the termination of the $7bn Solar for All grant programme by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the retraction of support for the 1GW Lava Ridge wind project in southern Idaho by the US Department of the Interior (DOI).

The Solar for All programme, established under former President Joe Biden, aimed to promote solar power adoption in low-income communities across the US. By 2024, it had awarded grants to 60 nonprofit groups, tribes, and states, initially targeting one million households for reduced electricity costs and lower emissions. However, the EPA has announced the termination of the programme following the enactment of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act by President Trump in July 2025. EPA Administrator Zeldin cited lack of authority and funds as the reason for the termination.

The Lava Ridge wind project, approved by the Biden administration in December 2024, has also fallen victim to President Trump's energy policies. The DOI has retracted its support for the project, aligning with President Trump's executive order to halt wind project permitting across the nation. This decision affects Groundswell, a non-profit organisation with a $156m grant pending for solar projects in rural areas of eight Southern states, benefiting over 17,000 households.

The termination of the Solar for All programme and the retraction of support for the Lava Ridge wind project mark significant changes in US energy policy under President Trump. These decisions align with his strategy to reduce federal support for renewable energies like solar and wind power.
