Airport Blockade: Court Convicts Climate Activists - Two 'Last Generation' Activists Sentenced for Cologne/Bonn Airport Runway Blockade

Two climate activists from 'Last Generation' have been sentenced for blocking the runway at Cologne/Bonn Airport last August. The 27-year-old activist received an 11-month suspended sentence, while the 45-year-old activist was given a 9-month suspended sentence.

The incident, which occurred in August 2024, saw the activists glue themselves to a feeder of a takeoff and landing runway, causing significant disruption to flight operations. Around 3,000 passengers were directly affected, with another 13,000 indirectly impacted. The airport lost at least 50,000 euros in revenue as a result.

The disruption led to 20 flights being cancelled and one flight being diverted. Additionally, three planes had to return to the gate. Both activists have been ordered to pay 2,000 euros each to a charitable organization and perform 300 hours of unpaid work. The specific charity has not been disclosed.

The sentences come as a result of the activists' involvement in the airport blockade, which highlighted the growing concern over climate change and the need for more urgent action. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential impact of such actions on both the environment and the public.
