Two new bridges are slated for construction over the Bega River in Romania's city of Timișoara.
In the heart of western Romania, the city of Timișoara is set to undergo a significant transformation as two bridges, the Solventul Bridge and the "Iuliu Maniu" Bridge, are scheduled for demolition and rebuilding.
The "Iuliu Maniu" Bridge, originally known as the Labor Bridge, will be rebuilt near the former cigarette factory. The new bridge will boast two lanes in each direction, sidewalks, and bike lanes, and will be financed with EU-backed funds worth over RON 38 million (EUR 7.4 million). Approximately RON 12 million (EUR 2.4 million) will come from the local budget. The tender for the new bridge is currently in the evaluation phase, and the execution contract is expected to be signed this summer.
The "Iuliu Maniu" Bridge, built in 1978, is one of the remaining 11 bridges in Timișoara, with two of them currently nonfunctional. Before 1900, over 70 bridges and footbridges crossed the Bega River in Timișoara, a testament to the city's rich history.
The Solventul Bridge, on the other hand, will connect Gării Street to Dâmbovița Boulevard and complete the city's Ring Road IV. This new bridge will have double tram tracks, bicycle lanes, wide sidewalks, and pedestrian access with an elevator. The total value of the investment for the Solventul Bridge is RON 134 million (EUR 26.6 million), with approximately RON 93 million (EUR 18.4 million) coming from European funding. The municipality's contribution amounts to RON 42 million.
The Solventul Bridge will be the first new bridge built over the Bega since 1989. The company or administrative organization likely to take over the construction project of the new Solventul bridge section is the local public infrastructure authority in Timișoara, typically the municipal public works department or a contracted engineering firm assigned by the city administration.
Mayor Dominic Fritz announced the construction of these two new bridges over the Bega River. The Solventul Bridge, once completed, will significantly improve the city's infrastructure and traffic flow, making Timișoara more accessible and livable for its residents and visitors alike.
