German Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) embarks on a six-day expedition to the US, meeting with US officials, businesses, and think tanks. The representatives' chat will revolve around the protracted trade dispute between the EU and the US, as disclosed by a Federal Ministry of Economics spokesperson in Berlin.

Reiche will align her lobbying strategy with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and the EU Commission, promoting an amicable negotiating solution. She intends to accentuate the indispensable role of free trade relationships between the US and the EU for both regions' prosperity.

US President Donald Trump initiated a trade war by blindsiding trading partners with his protectionist policies. Trump initially slapped exorbitant tariffs on numerous nations in April, only to subsequently lower them to 10% for a three-month period. A steep 25% tariff remains on luxury items like automobiles and car parts. Trump openly threatened the EU with further tariff hikes, and on Tuesday, he declared the EU was not presenting a "fair deal" in the ongoing talks.

The EU anticipates negotiation leeway until July 9. If negotiations fall flat, Brussels has crafted counter-tariffs set to materialize as soon as July 14, according to Brussels sources. EU Commission representatives have aired criticisms that the US is barking for maximum demands, remaining uninterested in compromise.

The ongoing trade feud between the EU and the US remains contentious, with no conclusive deal in sight. Both sides have prepared tariffs as a bargaining chip, with the EU contemplating import duties on a host of US products and export restrictions on scrap metals and chemicals, impacting roughly €139.5 billion in imports and exports[1,2]. Similarly, the US has continued to enforce tariffs, issuing new rules that could expand tariff coverage when needed[3].
