U.S. CBP's Operation Plaza Spike Boosts Fentanyl Seizures Along Arizona-Mexico Border
U.S. authorities have stepped up their fight against fentanyl smuggling along the Arizona-Mexico border. Operation Plaza Spike, led by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), is targeting Mexican cartels shipping the deadly drug into the United States. Sergio Valenzuela Valenzuela, known as 'Don Gio,' was identified as the principal local target earlier this year.
The operation's success is evident in the rising number of seizures. In Tucson's field office, which includes Nogales, fentanyl seizures have been increasing since May. A staggering 900,000 pills were seized over a 30-day period ending September 24 in Nogales, Arizona alone.
The week ending September 2 saw more than half a million pills confiscated, with a single day on September 19 yielding over 300,000 pills. In separate incidents on September 6 and 7, two individuals were found with a combined total of over 44,000 pills strapped to their bodies. On September 11, a pedestrian attempting to cross the border was caught with 164,800 pills.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) has partnered with Mexican authorities to dismantle a Nogales-based criminal organization involved in fentanyl and other drug trafficking. This joint effort was announced on July 7.
The increasing seizures and targeted operations indicate a significant effort to combat fentanyl smuggling along the Arizona-Mexico border. While 'Don Gio' was previously identified as a key target, there is no current information on the local main target of Operation Plaza Spike in Nogales, Arizona. Authorities continue to work together to disrupt these deadly supply chains.
