U.S. Measles Cases Top 1,024, with Texas Outbreak Slowing Slightly

Measles Outbreak in the Southwest U.S. Slows Yet Remains a Concern

The number of newly reported measles cases in Texas and other affected states has decreased to less than ten cases last week, according to recent data. However, health experts caution that the outbreak is far from over.

Dr. Manisha Patel, incident manager at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), remarked on Thursday that the affected states remain vigilant due to the travel season. She pointed out that there is currently a high level of global measles activity.

To date, the U.S. has confirmed 1,024 measles cases across the nation. Texas continues to report the highest number of cases.

In addition to the Southwestern U.S. outbreak, there are three other major measles outbreaks in North America:

  1. Ontario, Canada, has reported 1,622 cases from mid-October through May 13, marking a 182-case increase in the past week.
  2. Alberta, Canada, has affected 409 individuals as of Thursday.
  3. The Mexican state of Chihuahua has reported 1,306 cases and one death since the beginning of the outbreak.

Although the outbreak in the Southwest U.S. started earlier this year, it has already claimed the lives of two elementary school-aged children in Texas and an adult in New Mexico. All three individuals were unvaccinated.

Measles is a contagious airborne viral disease that is prevented through vaccination. It was eradicated in the U.S. in 2000 but has seen a resurgence in recent years, mainly due to a decrease in vaccination rates and an increase in unvaccinated individuals returning from countries with active measles outbreaks.

Measles cases have been reported in various parts of the U.S., including Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, and Texas. Vaccination remains the best way to avoid measles. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is administered in two doses – the first between 12 and 15 months, and the second between 4 and 6 years.

Although measles has a harder time spreading through communities with high vaccination rates, many children are missing vaccinations due to religious or personal exemptions. This opens up opportunities for the disease to spread rapidly.

Measles symptoms include a high fever, runny nose, cough, red, watery eyes, and a rash. Most children recover from measles, but it can lead to dangerous complications such as pneumonia, blindness, encephalitis, and death.

There is currently no specific treatment for measles; doctors focus on managing symptoms, preventing complications, and providing comfort to patients.
