UK Budget Disappoints Cycling, Walking Advocates With Lack of Investment

The UK Government's latest budget has sparked concern among cycling and walking advocates. Despite the importance of reducing car reliance and improving air quality, the Spending Round announcement lacked significant investment in these areas.

Xavier Brice, the Chief Executive, responded to the budget, expressing disappointment in the lack of focus on walking and cycling. He called for the Government to show commitment to achieving cycling and walking targets, echoing the sentiments of the Science and Technology Committee, which emphasized the need for fewer vehicles to meet climate change targets.

The Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy, introduced in 2017, aims to make cycling and walking the natural choices for shorter journeys. However, no allocated funding was mentioned for this strategy in the recent budget. An additional £30 million was announced to tackle air quality issues, but it's unclear how much of this will directly benefit cycling and walking initiatives.

The lack of investment in cycling and walking suggests that these modes of transport are not a priority for the UK Government. With the potential to reduce car reliance and improve air quality, advocates hope that the Government will show greater commitment to these targets in the future.
