UK's parcel delivery service Yodel gets purchased by Polish competitor InPost, solidifying InPost's position as the third largest player in the British market.
In a significant blow to the UK's parcel delivery market, Poland-based logistics powerhouse InPost has snapped up a whopping 95.5% stake in British parcel giant Yodel. This strategic move, valued at a hefty £106 million, propels InPost to the third-largest independent parcel operator in the UK, trailing behind heavyweights Royal Mail and Evri.
The acquisition was no ordinary deal. InPost transformed a £106 million loan to Yodel's parent company, Judge Logistics Ltd, into equity through a debt-to-equity conversion. UK-based payment services provider PayPoint retains the remaining 4.5% stake.
The partnership between Yodel and InPost began in October 2024, with Yodel providing last-mile delivery services for InPost's popular "locker-to-door" service. The aim is to fuse InPost’s extensive network of automated parcel machines (APMs) with Yodel's home delivery capabilities, offering a comprehensive e-commerce delivery solution to retailers nationwide.
With the acquisition under its belt, InPost's UK market share surges from a humble 2% to a robust 8%. The combined operations are expected to manage over 300 million parcels annually, serving more than 700 online retailers. InPost now controls an impressive 10,000 APMs and over 18,000 out-of-home pick-up points across the UK.
Rafał Brzoska, InPost's founder and CEO, spoke enthusiastically about the move. "This acquisition marks a pivotal milestone in InPost's journey to revolutionize the UK delivery market as well as the group’s pan-European presence."
The total value of the transaction, including debt refinancing, amounts to £136 million. InPost anticipates a positive impact on its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) within a year. The company has also announced plans to invest an additional £600 million in the UK by 2029 to further expand its operations.
This acquisition comes hot on the heels of InPost's purchase of Menzies Distribution in October 2024, giving the company full control over its UK logistics operations.
The consolidation of InPost and Yodel's services is expected to boost delivery efficiency and customer experience in the UK e-commerce sector. By integrating out-of-home delivery options with traditional home delivery, InPost aims to offer flexible and sustainable solutions catering to the evolving demands of online shoppers.
As the UK parcel delivery market continues to grow, InPost's strategic investments and acquisitions put the company in a prime position to shape the future of logistics and e-commerce in the region.
