## A Celebration of Courage: Albert Berner's 90th Birthday and Legacy

On a recent occasion, the BERNER Group honoured its founder, Albert Berner, on his 90th birthday. The event, held under the motto "90 years of courage," was a celebration not just of Berner's milestone birthday, but also of his entrepreneurship, values, and significant contributions to Germany and Europe.

Born in the aftermath of World War II, Berner's childhood was marked by death, destruction, and loss of home and possessions. Despite these challenging circumstances, Berner's father, Christian Berner, noted that he had many moments of fear and despair but always attacked as the best form of defense, even if it was risky. This resilient spirit became a defining characteristic of Albert Berner's life.

Berner's generation believed in the link between business growth and social responsibility. He understood that prosperity only exists with performance and did not wait for help from the outside. This self-reliant approach, coupled with his determination and innovative spirit, propelled him to success.

With just 3,000 Deutsche Marks, Berner became self-employed almost overnight in 1957. He took on debt to finance necessary investments and put a significant portion of his company at risk to open up new business fields or markets abroad, despite not knowing the local languages.

The event was held in the presence of friends, politicians, business leaders, and society members. Peter Schmidt, CEO of BERNER Omnichannel Trading Holding, congratulated Berner and praised the company's adherence to his professional ideals and personal compass. Christian Berner, CEO of the BERNER Group, expressed a desire to learn courage from his father.

A photo exhibition guided guests through key stations of Berner's career, highlighting his numerous achievements and the impact he has had on the company and the wider community. The Albert Berner Foundation, established by Berner, has achieved a lot of good in the Hohenlohe region and other locations of the group.

Dr. Walter Doering, former Minister of Economics and Deputy Minister President of Baden-Württemberg, praised Berner as a "pioneer and co-founder of the German economic miracle." The economic miracle, or "Wirtschaftswunder," was a period of rapid economic growth and rebuilding in West Germany after World War II, characterised by significant investments in infrastructure, technology, and human capital, as well as strategic economic policies.

Berner's 90th birthday celebration was a testament to his courage, determination, and the enduring impact he has had on the BERNER Group and the wider business community. His legacy serves as an inspiration for future generations, encouraging them to approach challenges with resilience and a spirit of innovation. The 8,000 employees of the company continue to hold Berner in high respect, embodying his values and continuing his legacy.
