Unvaccinated Puppy Seized at German Border: Owner Fined
A 28-year-old German man has been caught importing an unvaccinated puppy from the Czech Republic, violating animal health and welfare regulations. The puppy was discovered during a customs check in Schirnding in August.
The four-week-old puppy was found without a valid rabies vaccination, microchip, or EU pet passport. The man, who bought the puppy in Cheb for around 200 euros, now faces fines up to 25,000 euros or imprisonment in severe cases. The puppy has been taken to a quarantine shelter, and the owner will be charged for the quarantine and necessary vaccinations.
The head of KEV Selb has warned about the risks of buying puppy dogs abroad. These include the spread of diseases and stress to the animals. The prevention of rabies introduction and spread is a crucial task, as it is fatal for both animals and humans. Since December 30, 2014, the import of dogs into Germany without valid rabies vaccination has been prohibited.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to pet import regulations. Failing to do so not only risks the health of pets but also poses a threat to public health and safety.
