USA authorizes arms sale to Israel valued at 433 million euros

In the midst of an escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, the United States has announced a significant arms sale worth $510 million (€433 million) to Israel. The sale, which includes precision-guided ammunition and related equipment, is intended to enhance Israel's ability to defend its borders, critical infrastructure, and population centres.

The conflict, which lasted for twelve days and involved the exchange of rocket and drone attacks, began in mid-June when Israel launched a major attack on military targets in Iran. Iran responded with rocket and drone attacks on Israel, and the U.S. joined the war by bombing Iran's nuclear facilities at Fordo, Natans, and Isfahan.

The State Department has approved the potential sale, and the DSCA has submitted the required notification to the U.S. Congress. The rationale given for the sale is that the U.S. is committed to Israel's security, and the sale is considered vital to the national interests of the U.S. to support Israel in developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defence capability.

The military operation consumed large amounts of ammunition, and the U.S. has transferred tens of thousands of bombs, thousands of Hellfire missiles, and other advanced ordnance to Israel since October 2023. Israeli officials have also sought expedited deliveries of high-end systems such as F-15s, F-35s, Apache helicopters, and aerial refueling tankers (KC-46A) to sustain Israel’s advanced capabilities to deter Iran and its proxies effectively.

The sale comes in a context reshaped by the 2023–2025 Iran-Israel conflict, which has intensified strategic competition in the Middle East. The U.S. views its military support as essential to countering Iran’s regional ambitions and enabling Israel to defend itself against Iranian-backed threats. This is part of a broader realignment where Gulf states also increasingly align with Israel to counterbalance Iran, thereby reinforcing U.S. and allied defence partnerships.

The sale still needs to be approved by the U.S. Congress, but it underscores the critical support the U.S. is providing to Israel during this time of heightened regional tensions and ongoing conflicts with Iran. The sale is a reflection of the strategic imperative to sustain Israel’s military advantage, support operations against Iranian proxies, and contribute to regional stability amidst the ongoing conflict.

  1. The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran involves multiple policy considerations, with the United States' employment policy making a significant shift, by approving a $510 million arms sale to Israel amidst general-news of continual clashes.
  2. The strategic competition in the Middle East's energy industry has led to increased attention on war-and-conflicts, as the U.S. Finance sector has provided substantial military support to Israel through numerous sales, including $20 billion worth of arms in August 2024.
  3. During the conflict, Israel's critical infrastructure and population centers witnessed severe attacks, necessitating the swift delivery of tens of thousands of bombs and thousands of Hellfire missiles from the U.S., as documented in finance and business news from October 2023.
  4. In the aftermath of the 2023–2025 Iran-Israel conflict, Israel's requests for advanced systems such as F-15s, F-35s, Apache helicopters, and aerial refueling tankers (KC-46A) suggest a reevaluation of community policy concerning defense alliances and the role of the U.S. in the Middle East's ongoing political landscape.
