WaFd CEO Survives Plane Crash; Expansion into California Announced

Washington Federal (WaFd) CEO Brent Beardall survived a plane crash at Provo Municipal Airport yesterday afternoon. The incident occurred around 3:30 PM local time, involving a twin-engine jet that crashed shortly after takeoff. Tragically, Nathan Ricks, a WaFd client and pilot, lost his life in the crash. Beardall, along with Dane Margetts and Joyce Ricks, sustained injuries. Meanwhile, WaFd announced plans to expand into California by acquiring Luther Burbank Corp. in a $654 million all-stock transaction.

Beardall, who is in good spirits, suffered broken bones and lacerations. He underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. During his absence, Cathy Cooper, WaFd's executive vice president, will assume his duties. The National Transportation Safety Administration (NTSB) will investigate the cause of the crash. The plane had banked hard left before crashing. WaFd's Utah commercial division manager, Dane Margetts, and Joyce Ricks, Nathan Ricks' wife, also sustained injuries in the crash. WaFd's expansion into California follows the acquisition of Luther Burbank Corp., a significant step in the company's growth strategy.
