In a strategic move to bolster its end-to-end supply chain for Angus beef, Walmart U.S., the leading food and consumables retailer in North America according to Progressive Grocer's 2025 list, has opened a state-of-the-art facility in Olathe, Kansas. The 300,000-square-foot plant processes fresh Angus beef into retail case-ready cuts, marking the first time Walmart has directly owned and operated such a facility.

The new facility is a critical part of Walmart's strategy to gain full control over sourcing, processing, packaging, and distribution. John Laney, EVP, food at Walmart U.S., stated that the facility's opening is aimed at delivering affordable food and quality customers can trust.

Walmart's strategy includes investing in Sustainable Beef LLC, a Nebraska-based, locally owned cattle supplier that sources cattle within a 250-mile radius of the plant. This ensures local, sustainable sourcing and closer oversight of cattle quality and handling.

The Olathe facility processes 215,000 pounds of beef daily (about 55 million pounds annually), allowing Walmart to significantly control supply, reduce costs by up to 15% per pound, and respond better to volatile market conditions. By controlling processing and packaging, Walmart increases transparency, consistency, and quality of beef products, supporting its goal to attract higher-income shoppers and improve its fresh food reputation.

The plant creates over 600 jobs for the local community and boosts the regional economy, emphasizing Walmart’s commitment to community impact alongside supply chain innovation. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly stated that Walmart's investment in Olathe is further driving the success of Kansas in the agriculture industry.

The processed beef will serve stores throughout the Midwest, helping Walmart to stabilize supply and pricing for Angus beef during a period of cattle supply scarcity (at a 74-year low) and rising beef and veal prices (8.6% year-over-year increase reported by USDA). The new facility enhances Walmart’s ability to deliver consistent quality beef with greater transparency to customers in a highly competitive and price-sensitive market.

Walmart U.S. employs approximately 2.1 million associates worldwide, and its weekly customer and member visits total approximately 270 million across more than 10,750 stores and numerous e-commerce websites in 19 countries. The company reported FY2025 revenue of $681 billion.

Progressive Grocer also named Walmart among its Retailers of the Century, highlighting the retail giant's enduring impact on the industry. The facility's opening in Olathe is a testament to Walmart's ongoing commitment to innovation, sustainability, and delivering value to its customers.
