Wandsworth Council Raises Rents 7% to Fund Services, Despite Criticism
Wandsworth Council, representing the London Borough of Wandsworth, has announced a 7% increase in council housing rents, effective from 3 April 2023. This decision, while criticized by the opposition, aims to meet rising costs and improve services for tenants.
The average weekly rent will increase by £8.03, excluding service charges. Despite being below the current inflation rate of 9.2%, the rent hike has been slammed by the opposition as adding to residents' financial strain during the cost-of-living crisis.
The council, however, argues that the increase will help fund better services, repairs, and the appointment of new estate managers. Furthermore, it will facilitate the delivery of new housing and tackle homelessness within the borough, known for its cultural programs and community initiatives.
From April 2023, council housing tenants in Wandsworth will see their rents rise by £8.03 per week. While the increase is below the current inflation rate, it has sparked criticism from the opposition. The council maintains that the additional funds will be used to improve services and combat homelessness.
