Stinky Himmash to Remain for Another Decade Due to Missed Contract Bids

"Water Utility" fails to initiate another phase of modernization for treatment facilities

The Water Utility Company ("Водоканал") failed to find a contractor for the third phase of modernization of the South Aeration Station in the Himmash neighborhood – not a single bid was submitted for the 1.65 billion ruble contract, according to a published procurement protocol. Built in 1975, the station purifies effluent water from central and southern parts of Yekaterinburg.

On the third phase, the contractor was supposed to construct an air blow station and three pumping stations for circulating active sludge. Additionally, existing structures, such as secondary settling tanks, aeration tanks, distributing and sludge chambers, were to be refurbished. The work was scheduled to be completed by May 31, 2027.

The modernization project is divided into ten stages. Afterward, "Водоканал" plans to update biological and mechanical filtration, construct an ultraviolet disinfection chamber, and facilities for waste sludge processing and further purification.

Himmash will continue to reek of sewage for at least another ten years

  • The total cost of modernizing the South Aeration Station is estimated at 20 billion rubles. Some phases may be outsourced through concessions.

Potential partners for the job

The detailed list of potential partners or companies specifically identified for the outsourcing of the third phase remains unclear, given the available information. However, based on the local industrial context and water infrastructure projects in the region, some potential partners that could be suitable candidates for the job are:

  • Local Engineering Firms: Companies like UZTM in Yekaterinburg, known for their experience in heavy industry and large-scale infrastructure production, could be potential partners for the modernization project[3].
  • Water Treatment Technology Providers: Firms specializing in water treatment, engineering, automation, and process control systems could also be potential candidates[4].
  • International Partnerships: Given the nature of the aeration station modernization, collaboration with local specialists or companies from abroad, particularly those with expertise in water treatment and large-scale infrastructure, could potentially be part of the solution[4].

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, consulting official tenders or municipal procurement channels in Yekaterinburg is highly recommended.

  • The delayed modernization of the South Aeration Station in Himmash may find new life through concessions, potentially partnering with local engineering firms such as UZTM, water treatment technology providers, or even international partnerships with water treatment and large-scale infrastructure expertise.
  • In light of the missed contract bids, the failure to find a contractor for the third phase could result in environmental-science concerned citizens advocating for the importance of secure funding and timely execution of the modernization project, given its impact on the local environment and water quality.
  • As finance plays a crucial role in the success of the project, it's imperative to analyze the various funding options and ensure that the utilization of energy-efficient technology in the modernization of the aeration station can lead to long-term savings and reduced emissions, contributing to a more sustainable future for the city of Yekaterinburg.
