West Munich U5 Line Expansion Update - Construction Milestone Reached
The U5 extension subway project in Munich is making significant strides, with key milestones recently achieved. The Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) is overseeing the project under the supervision of the City of Munich's Department of Urban Transport, ensuring careful planning and construction oversight.
One of the most recent developments is the completion of the slotted walls on both sides of Gotthardstraße. These slotted walls form the statically stable, waterproof outer shell of the U-Bahn structure, a crucial step in the applied deck construction method. This completion allows large construction machines to leave the construction site at Gotthardstraße, marking a significant reduction in dust and noise for local residents.
On the southern side of the new station, canal and borehole work for the outer walls has been carried out at the knee. Meanwhile, boreholes for deep shafts are being set every 100 meters between Laimer Platz and the future U-Bahn station "Baumschule Laim".
Two temporary bridges have been built over the existing pedestrian and cycle path underpasses at Pasing station. With the city now able to complete the concrete pouring of the tunnel cover, a new traffic lane will be created over these bridges, replacing the southern side of Josef-Felder-Straße in the fall.
Work on the slotted walls at Josef-Felder-Straße is scheduled to begin in the fall. The slotted walls, approximately 1.20 meters wide and around 30 meters deep, will be constructed in a similar manner to those at Gotthardstraße.
After the completion of deck concrete work, work under the deck, including complete ground excavation and the construction of the tunnel sole, will continue. All deck concrete work in Baulos 1 is expected to be completed by April 2026.
For those with questions or concerns about the project, experts from the U-Bahn construction are available at the U5 Info Center every Wednesday (except on holidays) from 3 pm to 7 pm. The U5 Info Center at Willibaldstraße 70 provides comprehensive information about the U5 extension.
The extension of U-Bahn Line U5 in western Munich is progressing, bringing a much-anticipated addition to the city's public transportation network. A total of 66,000 tons of concrete were used for this purpose, demonstrating the scale and complexity of the project.
As the project continues, the MVG and the City of Munich remain committed to minimising disruption to residents and ensuring the smooth progress of the U5 extension.
