You know how people keep trying to add exhaust systems to electric vehicles? Well, General Motors took a different approach with their recent patent. They’ve designed an emergency exhaust system with utilitarian appeal rather than traditional aesthetics. It’s all about function over form.

This is when battery cells begin generating heat faster than the cooling system can dissipate it, causing a chain reaction that produces flammable gases, often leading to the feared electric vehicle mishap—the infamous thermal event.
Think of GM’s patent as an elaborate wastegate instead of a conventional exhaust. It consists of various valves and caps that release the hot, combustible gases produced within malfunctioning battery cells and guide them through a series of baffles that divert them away from neighboring cells and into a central exhaust chamber, where they are vented outside the vehicle.
This design eliminates excess heat from the battery pack, removing potential ignition sources in one swift move.

Stellantis earlier this year applied for a patent for a similar system that incorporated a scrubber, similar to a catalytic converter, to remove unwanted components from the expelled mixture.
