Wind farm collaboration moves forward, propelled by extensive energy requirements
In a significant step towards clean energy initiatives, the municipalities of Fernwald, Buseck, and Giessen, located north of Steinbach in Hesse, have joined forces to create a new wind farm. Known as the 'Fernewald' wind park, this project aims to supply around 43,500 households with renewable electricity upon completion.
The collaboration between these three municipalities is a testament to intermunicipal cooperation, with the mayors agreeing that the wind farm should not only supply clean electricity but also strengthen regional value creation. This joint effort is being supported by the LEA Hesse State Energy Agency, which is showcasing local energy transition projects in Hesse.
The project developers for the Fernewald wind park are 'Lintas Green Energy GmbH' and 'Land+Forst Renewable Energies GmbH.' The operator company for the wind farm is currently in the process of being established. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with further implementation steps being prepared.
To minimise the impact on valuable and partly damaged forest areas, careful consideration has been given during the planning phase. While unavoidable interventions in the forest are necessary, the implementation is planned to be as gentle as possible, using existing paths and committing to reforesting affected areas. Local participation from municipalities and citizen energy cooperatives is a focus of the project.
Expert opinions are being finalised for the project, and the application for a building permit was submitted to the Giessen government presidency in June 2025. The short film released by the municipalities highlights the collaboration between the three municipalities in driving the energy transition forward.
Up to 70% of the shares will be owned by the municipalities and regional partners, demonstrating a strong commitment to this clean energy project. The Fernewald wind farm is a significant addition to the broader topic of clean energy initiatives in Hesse, and it is set to make a substantial impact on the region's energy supply and economic development.
