Wind power capacity in Romania set to surge by 50% within the next three years, reaching 4.5 Gigawatts.

Romania plans to incrementally expand the capacity of its upcoming wind farms, with projections indicating an increase from 380 MW this year to 490 MW in 2025 and 600 MW in 2027. This three-year period will see a nearly 1.5 GW expansion, as reported by Ziarul Financiar, based on estimates from WindEurope.

Following the commissioning of 50 MW of wind farms last year, Romania's wind farms stagnated at around 3.0 GW over the past five years. However, the expansion in wind energy capacity is part of a broader strategy to bolster Romania's renewable energy sector. For instance, ENGIE Romania recently acquired a 54 MW wind power project.

Germany, a leader in renewable energy, installed more wind projects in the EU last year with over 4.0 GW added. With a wind farm capacity of over 72.6 GW, Germany has achieved a share of 30% wind energy in its energy mix.

While specific projections for Romania's wind energy expansion over the next several years are not publicly available, Romania's economic growth could potentially position it as a competitive player in the EU, along with countries like Austria and Sweden. The progress made in Romania's wind energy sector is a positive step towards this goal.

  1. The expansion in Romania's wind energy capacity, projected to reach 600 MW by 2027, is not only a positive step towards increasing its renewable energy sector but also could potentially attract finance from environmental-science sectors, positioning Romania as a competitive player in the EU's green industry.
  2. As Romania's wind energy sector progresses, with strategic investments from companies like ENGIE Romania, it is expected that the sector could contribute significantly to Romania's overall energy mix, possibly aligning with the European Union's goals for increasing the use of renewable energy sources, such as wind, in the environmental-science and industry sectors.
