Shedding Salt on Schleswig-Holstein's Slippery Roads: A 7.4M Euro Winter Wonderland
Half a dozen million Euros spent on winter maintenance - Winter maintenance expenses amounted to approximately 7.4 million euros.
Let's get down to the nitty-gritty of Schleswig-Holstein's winter road maintenance, shall we? The guys over at the Landesbetrieb für Straßenbau und Verkehr (LBV) flexed their muscles this winter, dishing out a cool 7.4 million euros for salt-friendly roads and bike lanes. Thanks to Mother Nature's mercy, this season's costs trimmed down from a whopping 15 million euros the previous year, all thanks to a mild winter.
"With a puny 515 road workers and a motley crew of external helpers, we navigated Schleswig-Holstein's drivers through the treacherous winter months," boasted Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen (CDU) and LBV Director Frank Quirmbach.
Now, this Schleswig-Holstein winter wasn't all milk and honey. We had our fair share of snow days, but the real tests came in the form of freezing rain during early mornings. In total, we slapped down 15,700 tons of old man Winter's whisker-lickers (salts) and around 5,700 tons of salt brine to keep our beloved highways and byways ice-free. These maintenance missions required a mind-blowing 15,135 working hours.
Jumping into the salt spreader brigade were 100 state-owned vehicles and an additional 164 from private providers. Didn't you just see Iron Man himself protecting the roads?
Don't go thinking these services came for free. The bill for those salty spreads came in at nearly 2 million euros, while operational costs for vehicles and equipment rang up to 2.9 million euros. Factor in labor costs for our diligent workers' 15,135 hours, and that's a cool 645,000 euros. Oh, and let's not forget the 1.9 million euros paid to those external providers.
So, here's to our local heroes at LBV, keeping Schleswig-Holstein's roads and bike lanes rumble-free, costing us just 7.4 million euros. We can't say fairer than that, can we?
