WNBA Star Napheesa Collier Sparks Debate Over League's Platform and Compensation

Napheesa Collier, Minnesota Lynx star and WNBPA vice president, has sparked a debate with her comments on WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert and the league's platform. Collier, also co-founder of the alternative winter league Unrivaled, holds unique perspectives on both sides of the table.

Collier recently stated that Engelbert believes young stars like Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark 'should be on their knees' for the league's platform, which has reportedly helped Clark secure $16 million in off-court sponsorship deals. However, Engelbert responded by reaffirming her commitment to the players and their work.

The comments come amidst collective bargaining negotiations between the WNBPA and the WNBA. An extension of the current CBA's deadline, set for Oct. 31, is likely, as both sides continue talks into the offseason. This isn't unprecedented, with a similar extension happening in 2020.

Collier's remarks also shed light on Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 pro women's basketball league she co-founded. Recently valued at $340 million following an investment from Bessemer Venture Partners, Unrivaled could potentially challenge the WNBA. Last year, the league received financial support from Bessemer Venture Partners and Serena Williams's fund, Serena Ventures.

Collier's comments highlight ongoing discussions about the WNBA's platform, officiating, and compensation. Despite differing perspectives, both sides have agreed to extend negotiations, ensuring a new accord before the current CBA expires. Meanwhile, the emergence of Unrivaled adds a new dynamic to the women's basketball landscape.
