World Economy Domination Ambition Unleashed: Berlin Steps Forward to Rule Globally
Berlin, the vibrant heart of Germany, is gearing up for a significant period of international growth. The city's Senate has allocated 6 million euros to support global contacts, as part of an ambitious plan to establish offices in New York, Beijing, and Bangalore, India [1]. This move is aimed at facilitating connections with local companies and attracting talent to the city.
The city's industry is export-oriented, generating almost half of its turnover abroad. This economic expansion is expected to bring additional growth and stability at home. Last year, of the 29,739 new businesses founded in Berlin, 44 percent were by foreigners, and every fifth startup founder in the city is born abroad [2].
Bangalore, known as the Silicon Valley of India, with a population of 1.46 billion, presents a promising market for Berlin. Senator for Economics, Franziska Giffey (SPD), will lead an economic delegation to Bangalore, India, next week. The delegation's visit to Bangalore follows previous visits to New York and Beijing, with the Berlin Senate's global office in Bangalore scheduled to be established subsequently [3].
The Berlin Ambassadors network, a global network of prominent figures in various fields such as science, culture, creative industries, tourism, who live in the target country and promote Berlin, is also part of these efforts to make Berlin more internationally connected [4]. The Berlin Ambassadors are intended to help boost Berlin's international profile and attract more opportunities.
However, Berlin's plan for internationalization faces a challenge in the limited number of long-haul flights departing from the capital's airport, BER. Currently, more long-haul flights depart daily from west German airports than from BER, according to Giffey [5]. As of mid-2025, Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is actively expanding its long-haul flight network to support Berlin's global expansion plans.
A significant recent development is the launch of a new nonstop long-haul route from BER to Toronto, Canada, operated twice weekly by Air Transat during the 2025 summer schedule. This new connection strengthens BER's intercontinental network and opens new travel and economic opportunities for the Berlin-Brandenburg region [6]. The airport's ongoing improvements in infrastructure and services further facilitate this growth.
In a recent statement, Senator Giffey highlighted that it has only been possible twice in one year to attract more than one billion euros in investments to Berlin during the current legislative period [7]. This success underscores the city's potential for international growth and its commitment to becoming a global hub for innovation, culture, and business.

- Berlin's expansion plan involves establishing a global office in Bangalore, India, with the aim of tapping into the city's thriving business ecosystem, specifically in the sectors of science, culture, creative industries, and tourism.
- To achieve this growth, the city is investing heavily in enhancing its infrastructure, such as expanding the long-haul flight network at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), and attracting foreign investments, as demonstrated by the recent success of attracting over one billion euros in investments twice in one year.
