Year-Round Mining Prohibition Proposed in Buryatia and Zabaikalsk Regions by Energy Ministry

A prolonged ban on cryptocurrency mining in energy-deficient regions of Southeastern Siberia has been announced. Initially applicable during off-peak hours, the restriction will now extend until 2031[1]. As of November 1, 2024, Russia has implemented laws legalizing mining, but with limitations in various regions to maintain a balanced energy distribution.

Currently, mining is banned in Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, Chechnya, and the southern Irkutsk region, among others, until March 15, 2031. Additional restrictions are imposed in certain areas of Buryatia and the Zabaykalsky Krai during peak energy consumption periods[1].

According to recent reports, mining bans could expand to include the northern parts of Karelia, the Penza region, and parts of Hakasia. However, further details, such as whether these will be full or seasonal bans applicable during the heating season, have not been released[2].

It is important to note that while the Irkutsk region, Republic of Buryatia, and Zabaykalsky Krai have been mentioned in the context of this mining ban extension, the latest public reports do not explicitly confirm that these regions are explicitly part of the new restriction[1].

The cryptocurrency mining industry in energy-rich regions like Karelia, the Penza region, and parts of Hakasia might face extended bans, mirroring the restrictions currently in place in several regions of Southeastern Siberia. This move aims to maintain a balance in the finance and energy sectors, ensuring steady energy distribution.
