In a significant move towards promoting sustainable trade and circular economy practices, Dubai Airport Freezone (DAFZ) has formed a strategic partnership with China's Zhuanzhuan Group. The collaboration, marked by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will see Zhuanzhuan establish its Middle East regional headquarters within DAFZ, marking the company's first regional expansion outside China.

The partnership aims to develop a fully integrated supply chain for secondhand goods, encompassing recycling, inspection, classification, packaging, and distribution. This move aligns with Dubai's ambitions under the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 to become a global leader in sustainable trade and circular economy practices.

Zhuanzhuan, a top platform for secondhand goods in China, operates more than 960 physical stores across 80 cities in China and boasts over 400 million registered users. The company is renowned for championing eco-conscious business models, having achieved 4.1 million tons in carbon emission reductions through sustainable practices.

The Dubai-based Zhuanzhuan facility will be part of the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority (DIEZ). DAFZ will provide regulatory, institutional, and logistical support to facilitate Zhuanzhuan's setup and operations, enhancing Dubai’s position as a key trade gateway connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Both parties have committed to developing joint research and policy papers on circular economy trends and secondhand trade, aiming to catalyse new circular economy business models in the region. The partnership is expected to boost Dubai's circular economy by promoting sustainable, innovation-led global commerce through cross-border supply chains for secondhand consumer goods targeting Middle Eastern and global markets.

Amna Lootah, Director General of DAFZ, views the partnership as highlighting Dubai's appeal to international innovators. Wang Su, Corporate Vice President of Zhuanzhuan, considers Dubai an ideal launchpad for regional expansion due to its strategic location and infrastructure.

While the MoU does not mention specific goals for carbon emission reductions or eco-conscious practices for the Dubai-based facility, it reinforces Dubai's position as a hub for sustainable, innovation-led global commerce. Zhuanzhuan will align with regional compliance standards and bring in new opportunities from its global supply network. The partnership is expected to catalyse new business models in the circular economy.
